How to host a teepee sleepover party, step by step
By Team Teepee, Keyneton, Barossa Valley SA

To host a teepee sleepover party, measure the room you will use, choose a theme and the number of teepees, then collect or hire a complete kit. Set it up before guests arrive (a step-by-step photo guide makes this easy), keep the night simple, and pack everything away the way it came. Most of the work is in the planning, not the setup.
We have run teepee sleepover parties from Keyneton in the Barossa Valley since 2017. This is the process we walk every family through, whether it is their first teepee party or their fifth.
What’s in a teepee sleepover setup?
Each guest gets their own little space. In a Team Teepee kit, every teepee comes with:
- Teepee (1.3m tall × 1.16m wide)
- Foam mattress with protector & fitted sheet
- Pillow
- Luxury blanket
- Breakfast tray
- Lantern
- Assorted themed cushions
- Decorative floor rug
- Battery-operated fairy lights
- Light box sign or pin board
- Step-by-step setup guide with photos
Bedding goes out freshly laundered and everything is checked and cleaned between hires. If you only need a few pieces, such as extra mattresses or lanterns, our mix and match hire covers that too.
Step 1: Pick the room and measure it
The lounge, rumpus or a cleared-out family room works best. Each teepee is 1.3m tall and 1.16m wide and sits over a single foam mattress, so allow roughly a single-bed footprint per child, plus a walkway so kids can get up during the night without climbing over each other.
- Set up indoors on a flat, dry floor.
- Lining the teepees up along a wall, or in two facing rows, leaves the middle of the room free for games and a movie.
- Keep the setup well clear of heaters, candles and open flames. The SA Metropolitan Fire Service home heating fact sheet recommends ideally two metres between heaters and bedding, curtains or furniture.

Step 2: Choose a theme and lock in the date
Let the birthday child have the final say on the theme. Our eight signature themes run from Boho and Barbie to Minecraft, World of Wizardry and Wild Nights, and we can put together custom colours and cushions if they have something else in mind.
Weekends and school holidays book out first, so a few weeks’ notice is ideal. For SA state schools, the Department for Education term dates show the summer holidays running from 12 December 2026 to 27 January 2027, and those weeks are among the first to go. Last-minute party? Ask anyway. If the date is free, it is yours.
Step 3: Collect the kit
Team Teepee is DIY hire, which keeps the cost down. You pick everything up from us in Keyneton, about 10 minutes from Angaston and an easy drive from Nuriootpa, Tanunda, Eden Valley and the eastern Adelaide Hills. A large SUV, 4WD or ute will do the job, and a trailer is even better for bigger parties. Not sure it will all fit? Tell us your numbers and we will advise.
Step 4: Set up before the guests arrive
Every kit includes a step-by-step setup guide with photos, so you can style it to look like the pictures without any guesswork. A few things make the job smoother:
- Clear and vacuum the floor first.
- Set up earlier in the day so you are not rushing when the doorbell starts ringing.
- Get the kids involved. Most of them love helping put their own space together.
- Save the fairy lights and lanterns for last, then dim the room lights when guests arrive for the big reveal.

Step 5: Enjoy the night
The setup does most of the entertaining. Plan a couple of games, a movie or quiet activity in the teepees, and a lights-out time. Our sleepover games and activities post has plenty of ideas. A few house rules keep everything in good shape:
- Use the battery-operated fairy lights supplied. Do not swap in mains-powered lights.
- Where practical, keep food, drinks and pets away from the teepees and bedding. The breakfast trays are perfect for snacks.
- A responsible adult should supervise the party the whole time.
For allergies, button batteries and other safety checks, see our sleepover party planning checklist.
Send guests’ parents our what to bring to a sleepover checklist so nobody packs a sleeping bag they will not need.
Step 6: Pack down and return
Once the last guest has gone home, pack everything back the way it arrived and drop it back to us at the agreed time. Another family is often booked straight after you, so returning on time matters. If you are running late or something has gone wrong, call or message us and we will sort it out together. Our hire terms cover the details.
DIY teepee hire vs a styled setup service
Some teepee businesses deliver and style the room for you. That is convenient, but it adds delivery and styling fees. With DIY hire you do the setup yourself using the photo guide, which is why our kits start from $40 per teepee with everything included. One repeat customer described the teepees as “very easy to set up and pack away”.
